Newbie - Questions on water!

Post by jonnyt » Sat Nov 19, 2011 12:48 am

I'm in the process of building my own HLT from a 60L HPDE barrel using an Argos kettle element.
I've ordered my grains, hops, yeast etc, stitched together my bag but one thing is still unclear.

I'm intending to make a 23L Timothy Taylor Landlord from GWs book, but I have a couple of questions around the water.

Total grain bill is approx 4.3KG, should I add more for inefficiency?

1) How much water should I initially use? How is this calculated?
2) Assuming a mash at 66C what temperature should I initially heat the water to? Again how is this calculated?

Use the calculator from BIAB Brewer http://www.biabrewer.info/viewtopic.php ... 89&start=0.
Just add the figures you know and it calculates the water amount for you.

Do you know the ambient temp of your malt ? If so, put the figures into BrewMate (you will need to look that one up). There are plenty of guides available on Jim's as well. Just put strike temp into the search.

Edit. due to crap info :?
