biab mash bag

Post by Dave-Leeds » Mon Jan 06, 2014 8:38 pm

Hi guys

Done 2 biab 2nd was gw old perculier was aiming fo 1.057 but turned out 1.062
Did i do anything wrong?

1st biab went ok but the 2nd seemed to let alot of grain out of the bottom
of the bag. I use youngs i think mashing bag and the holes seem quiet large
on the bottom.is there any better bags about?

cheers

sounds reasonable; did you get the full volume you were aiming for? if you got less wort at a higher OG then you've simply boiled off more than you anticipated

come along to a Morley Homebrew demo day if you want any more advice on BIAB. Second Sunday of even-numbered months, 9am start. Check with Chris or Mick the owners beforehand to make sure there's room

You need some voile material for a bag which is a very fine net curtain material.

I do, yes. Not exactly a 'course', more of a demonstration.

I use the Ritchie "new" mashing and sparging bag, not sure if I've seen the Young's one. Chris sells both types

Of course some of the finer grains may get through, but once you've added the hops there's all sorts of stuff floating around in there.
getting a higher than expected gravity for the same volume simply means your efficiency is better than expected and is not to be worried about :-)

You could always add some more water to bring the gravity down

Hi

I've also just done my first BIAB and used the Young's Mashing bag

I noticed a bit of grain as well, but I'm not too concerned

My OG way too high, so I watered it down to what i wanted it to be, and now I'll have more beer, too lol

Hi ben

1st of many i bet

i used the ritchies bag got mixed up and thought it was youngs.think ill put my extra og to good efficiency. Came out with 23lts

But can see alot of crap in the fv but its fermenting nicley at the min.

What did u brew?

there'll always be some solids in the FV, not the least of which will be the yeast; I'm sure it'll all drop out as it nears FG. If you add finings a couple of days before you bottle/keg it, even more of it will drop out and you'll get clearer beer with less sediment in the bottle/keg.

Some people draw off the first couple of jugfuls of wort from the boiler - the first runnings - and add it back to the boiler, so that the hops do a better job of straining it in the first place. needs to be done carefully though, or you'll disturb all the crud in the bottom of the boiler & you're back to square one

getting a higher than expected OG often goes hand-in-hand with less wort than expected - basically you've boiled off more water than you expected to.
If you get a higher OG than expected with the right volume of wort, this is probably down to better efficiency - if you can work out your actual efficiency (don't ask me how!), you should be able to adjust your recipes accordingly, so that you end up using less grain for a given volume & OG

Think am going to rack off to another fv and bottle/keg from there.leave all the crud behind in the primary fv
and looks like a fair bit so far.been working days out for brew demo and am worki g every1 of them.have to try
Swap some about

that's what I do. rack into secondary when I'm certain that fermentation is complete, it leaves about half an inch of thick yeasty sediment. I then add finings to the secondary & leave 2-3 days, then bottle - you get a bit more sediment in the scondary, but nowhere near as much. I'm not a fan of kegs

What sort of finings do you use?, i used to bottle but just fill cornies now to go in kegerator and
fill a few bottles with what ever is left usualy 3 to 4 bottles
