volume of ambient wort ?

Post by sbond10 » Sat May 16, 2015 4:48 pm

What does VAW mean in terms of the biabacus let's say I want 25 litres in fv and the original recipe states it will give 23 litres in fv

Thanks in advance sean

VAW (Vol of cooled wort) = VIF (Vol into Fermenter) + KFL (Kettle to Fermenter loss - dead space, trub, hops).

I think...

^ This. Basically it’ll be the total amount of wort left in your boiler once it’s chilled…

Your volume in to the fermenter (VIF) will be slightly different from VAW as it takes in account for kettle loses (e.g. what the hobs absorb, trub etc).

volume of ambient wort ?

The reason they differentiate between VAW and end of boil volume is because the wort will shrink by quite a bit as it cools to pitching temperature , e.g. 23L of hot wort will shrink by around a litre just by cooling it.

So of I want 25 litres into fv I'd say 27 litres or would I leave this blank for my first run until I know my boil losses ?

In BIABacus under Secton ‘B’ just fill in VIF (Volume into Fermenter) to 25 litres and it’ll estimate the rest for you. But yes it'll work out to about 27 litres (VAW).

If you a copying a recipe it gets a little bit tricky because you need to know what volumes they are talking about. A lot of recipes don't always clearly define this.

f00b4r makes an interesting point here, that I had never considered. If I'm starting a BIAB brew with 37 litres of cold (15°C) water, by the time it is heated to 70°C strike temperature it will be around 37.8 Litres. Not a huge difference, probably not noticeable in the final beer, but interesting.
