all gone wrong
all gone wrong
hi all. done my first biab,
got a 33lt boiler. filled with 15lt of water, put a crushed Camden tablet in.
got it to 70 degrees, put 4 kilos of grain in, got a temp of 67 for 1 and a half hours.
took bag out and 4 lts of hot water poured over it in fv bucket.
put water in boiler, and boiled water, added hops and got a rolling boiler for 90 mins.
cooled in 20 mins with wort chiller. to 21 degrees.
put yeast in, to ferment, 4 days later nothing no air bubbles in air lock,
gave it a stir, 24 hours later still nothing,
so syphoned off to new fermenter, got some yeast from wilkos.
2 days later still nothing, this was a tt landlord.
instructions from gw recipe, as near as dam it,
bit gutted now,
any pointers to whats gone wrong.
thanks sam.

Have you measured the gravity?

A bubble in an airlock is not a way to determine fermentation.
You can either use a hydrometer, this is the preferred method. Test the gravity before you pitch the yeast and then test it after about 7-10 days to see if it's done.
The other option is to taste it at various stages, initially it will be really sweet, then the sweetness will disappear and be replaced by alcohol.

Re: all gone wrong
I may have something happening,
my starting sg was 1040, but gw book says 1042.
it is now 1020 after 2 weeks. but at the brewing process there is no added sugar with gw recipe.
my other book by dave line says with keg beers to add sugar at the end of boiling stage.
before cooling to a temp before adding yeast to fv.
so 1 is this why I have not got the 1042 sg. because the wort was not sweet enough,
and 2 all my kit and extract ales have got a bubble in the airlock after 24 hours.
so bit confused, please help me you experts.
thank you sam.

Re: all gone wrong
The reason you got 1040 rather than 1042 is you didn't extract quite as much sugar from the wort as expected. I wouldn't worry about that at all.
It is very rare I add any sugar to a brew, only when doing something really strong.
The lack of bubbles probably means you had a leak where the lid goes on the FV, again, not really something to worry about.
Sounds to me like you made beer

thanks I will let you know.

Re: all gone wrong
You have a couple of options Sam.
1. Check the temp of the FV. If is too cold it won't ferment out. So crank up the heat to 22C.
2. Pitch some new yeast into the FV.
3. Sanitise a spoon and give it a gentle stir to rouse the yeast.
