Stuck with my corny

Post by SiMania » Fri Feb 07, 2014 12:41 am

HI, I've recently acquired a couple of cornies, and got the bits and bobs to allow be to attach the co2 bottle to it via a regulator

I'm doing a dry run with water before I put some beer into it, I can get plenty of co2 into the keg, but I can't work out how much is in there or how to regulate it. As soon as I open the valve on the tank it hisses like mad, I think I can put less pressure in by only turning it slightly and playing around with the knob on the regulator. Is the co2 bottle supposed to hiss all the time it's open or have I got a problem somewhere in my setup?

*edit* a bit more info, I have this regulator

The hose in the picture I cut off the end bit so it would fit into the 3/8 inch John Guest Speedfit connector.

Looks like I have the same problem as this chap here viewtopic.php?f=6&t=40573

So I need to find a washer to seal the connection I think.

also check the hose to john guest fitting as I dont think that the braided hose will seal properly
you will probably need a john guest hose stem to 3/8 fitting like this

Check the regulator as closed is with the nob turned completely ANTICLOCKWISE. You then turn clockwise to pressurise the keg. I didn't realise this at first  god knows why it's back to front
Cheers and gone,

Just think of the reg tap as a volume control :)

Just so I'm not completely jumping the gun.....I shouldn't expect co2 to be hissing out of the bit below the valve that connects it to the tank?

Sorted it, the regulator needed to be fitted better, that was it, now looks like I have a leak in the corny as I'm losing pressure :(

This problem could be due to several things.

1 one of the posts is either not properly tightened ( i had this problem and fixed it with an o ring and some PFTE tape. if it can be done put the empty corny in the bath or similar and cover it. then charge it and look for bubbles:)

2 often the leakage point is actually the lid. Either the safety valve PSV is slightly out of position, or the lid had not sealed properly.

To check both is relatively simple. Pull the PSV up and them make sure it sits properly in place. In regard to the lid charge the keg with a higher pressure and you may well see the lid actually move into plave, then release all the pressure before charging with gas to the level you want. once they are first sealed they are great!

Good luck

It could be losing pressure as the co2 is absorbed into the beer. How quickly is it losing pressure?

What psi are you putting into it? Some need more thar 3-4psi to seal the lid.

It seems to be losing it over a few hours, it could be absorption as there's still a bit of pressure there to dispense beer.

I couldn't see any leaks when I sprayed some foamy solution over it. Could try putting it in the bath, advisable to do it when the corny is full?

Just pumped some co2 in it and gave it a relaxing bath - no bubbles coming from the lid or posts, so assume it's fine.

It's one of the kegs without the PSV on the lid btw.
