First ever bottle bomb!

Post by gibbiem » Tue Jun 17, 2014 7:25 am

Happened this morning about 3am ha ha. We're staying at Centre Parcs so brought some beers down. It was one of coppers cervezas that blew but I have no idea why. It's been bottled for weeks now, been in fridge and stored at room temp. Only got about 6 bottles left, went in to 330ml bottles and some in Adnams bottles. Was an Adnams bottle that went. Any ideas why? Infected bottle maybe?

Probably took a knock at some point in the past and had an invisible stress weakness somewhere in the structure of the glass.

I have only ever had one.
It went when I knocked the crate the bottles were stored in which just caused the bottles to clatter a bit and the shoulder part of one bottle just exploded under the carb pressure.
When I took a closer look it was a very weak/thin section of glass, so was a defective bottle which I guess happens from time to time.

Fortunately all of my beers are stored in those plastic lock-down lid boxes, so the mess was really easy to clear up too - which was a relief. Unlike my memories of my parents elderberry wine concoctions that used to explode in the under-stairs cupboard!

Funny you say that, as I was bottling my latest brew I noticed one of my newcy Brown bottles had a defect! had to pour the brew! better than going home to a bottle bomb though. This one may have been knocked on the journey

I remember having a whole crate go off when I was at work about 18 years ago. My first flat with my then girlfriend, I was using the spare bedroom as a storage space for my stuff including home brew. Well, it was a really hot summers day, and we came home to the aroma of John Bull Best Bitter and found broken bottles and beer on the ceiling and walls! - in those days I used to use a whole tea spoon of sugar to prime as well! Fizzy old stuff it was too, when I got some into a glass! Lesson learnt!!
