Will a little-bottler tap withstand pressure-barrel pressure

Post by timmydog » Mon Oct 13, 2014 4:20 pm

Hello all,

I'm making my first Ditch's stout, but I want to bottle some of it as well as serve some of it from my King Keg.

I normally batch prime and use a little bottler - http://www.home-brew-online.com/equipme ... stick-p669 - to do my bottling from my King Keg (it seemed like a waste of money buying another bucket and my storage space is limited).

So My question is this: do you think that the tap supplied with the little bottler will be able to withstand the pressure in the cask and not leak stout all over the place?

The tap turns around to allow you to put the cask on a flat surface without getting in the way and doesn't seem nearly as substantial (stout?) as the regular tap and I don't think that I trust it, but wanted to know if anyone here had any experience with a similar tap on a pressure barrel.

Any opinions gratefully received.

Tim

Never tried it but I'd have thought it would be OK. They look like the same basic construction as the simple lever taps but with a back nut.
Best wishes

I gave this a test by filling the cask 3/4 full of water and put some pressure into it then dried the tap as well as I could and leaving it in a dry bath. Unfortunately, there was some water under the tap when I checked on it later. I wiped the drips up and left it a while longer and again, there was some leakage.

I don't think that the tap is quite as robust as the taps that are intended to take pressure and so I didn't risk it.

Oh and BTW, the stout is lovely. Thanks to Ditch for the recipe and the inspiration to try it! :-)
