Also where`s best place to get gelatine from. Been in asda this morning ... tried home baking & nr jelly`s section couldn`t find any. Thanks, Dave.
If you find sheet gelatine use 2 sheets softened then drained and then thoroughly mixed in half a cup of boiling hot water. Stir until it is not visible i.e. completely disolved. Just pour it into the secondary, no need to stir, and leave for a couple of days before transfering to bottling bucket and then add your priming sugar and stir thoroughly. The Malt Miller stocks sheet gelatine. It is not the gelatine holding the yeast to the bottom it is just the yeast with all the impurities removed.
Good luck and clear beer

FWIW none of my FVs have airlocks, mainly because none of my FVs are airtight so airlocks wouldn't work in my case. The FVs just have lids resting on the top, or for those without lids a tea-towel. Theres still no way for even tiny flies to get in though and no easy way for spores to float in, which I think are the main ways infection can creep in - its always been fine for 3-4 weeks anyway.

EDIT: Not that I'm criticising airlocks at all, I don't know of any negatives to using them (in the right FV) provided they're kept clean - especially after overflows! The biggest issue is probably newbies thinking their fermentation has ended when in fact they're just using them in FVs which aren't suitably airtight.

Cheers

Thanks IPA regarding the gelatine, sure I`ll get hang of it once I start kegging. Thanks Kev I`m same mate have fermenters (large lid type) and usually just crack lid. I also transfer to secondary, under airlock, but am going to try leaving in primary and then straight to corny, will save me some time. Seems that we all have different ways, and all get good results, so that can`t be bad.
Cheers Dave.

It might save you a bit of time but how much? The beer will still need the same time to mature. Please post the results. It just might be a better way to go
