Perlick Flow Controll Taps- Foaming Issue

Post by Addled Jim » Sun Nov 30, 2014 1:27 pm

Hi
I recently had a pair of taps brought over from the US but I'm having trouble with too much foam despite experimentation.
I have connected a short piece of standard 3/8 beer line over the hose barb supplied with the taps and secured this with a jubaliee clip, then this goes into 3/8 to 3/16 JG fitting to allow for a smaller length of lower diameter tube to reduce the pressure to the glass.
Could anybody tell me how they have set theirs up, as despite using the flow control on the tap the beer is still too frothy?
Thanks,

I have read loads of advice on this matter. Tube lengths and diametres and it seems to me all down to temperature and CO2. pressure.
I recently connected a cornie to the tap with 60cm of 7mm pipe and then with 3 metres of 4mm pipe and they both poured the same ! I think the solution is to reduce the serving pressure and the temperature and not to over carbonate in the first place

I had things working ok with my Dalex taps, so I presumed my keg pressure would behave similarly with the Perlicks
I force carb at 1bar for 3 days and only top up with more Co2 when necessary - this worked fine at 12c serving temp
I was concerned that the stepping down from 3/8 (2 meters) to 3/16 (40cm) then another right angled 3/8 to 3/16 JG to allow connection to the Perlick tap barb might be causing the problem - I was wondering how people with the same taps configured theirs?

I have perlick's with flow control but as IPA said, if you carbonate a little lower and keep the temp to 12 or under you will end up not having to use flow control. I use about 6" of 3/8 and only have a little fob because of the usual air lock left in the pipe from the previous pour. I don't mind this as it gives me a nice head, all this is dispensed with the tap fully open. It takes a bit of experimenting but I'm now down to carbonating for 1 or 2 days at 20 psi at 12c depending on what the style is. Bitters/Pale Ales 1 day, Stouts etc 2. Dispense pressure is as low as I can get it to still pour at a comfortable pace.

For now try releasing gas with PRV till it's nearly all gone and see if that helps, chilling down first.
