Cool Beer Bottles

Post by Chill » Mon May 18, 2015 7:30 pm

So I had been looking for some swing top beer bottles for a while, then a good friend of mine turned up at my house with these.

A lot more than i was expecting which was good, the question is, how to clean them all as some are well over 10 years old, leave them to soak with some sterilising solution?

Cool bottles. Let them soak in oxyclean solution and sanitise with something like starsan.

Yeah I usually just clean my regular bottles with washing up liquid and sterilise with an iodine based steriliser, however i think i need something more hardcore, is oxyclean like soda crystals?

Edit: Another question is if/where it would be possible to get any replacement rubber o-rings for these things? and if so some of the seals are perishing :(

Replacement seals here: http://www.the-home-brew-shop.co.uk/aca ... VsawmK9KSM

Oxyclean isnt that hardcore, but it very effective. It costs a quid as well from the pound shop, whiz oxy i use. This one: http://www.bmstores.co.uk/products/wizz ... 1kg-271948

Thanks, I'll try and pick up some Oxyclean next time i go to one of these shops, unfortunately the link to the seals you have given me is for the smaller seals which seem to be everywhere, the bigger ones not so much, ive found suppliers in Germany/USA, none in the UK yet however :(

Cut your own seals from a piece of silicone baking tray.

Thanks for the replies, I managed to get a couple of replacement O rings shipped form Germany and ive given the bottles a good clean out with oxiclean, turns out we had some with the washing power (not anymore).

I've heard it can be hard to get a decent seal with these and its worth lubing up the washers first which i'm all for, can't hurt! Next questions is, what lube? I've heard Vaseline/silicone grease can damage the seals depending on what material they are made out of (I have no idea? rubber? silicone?) or the other suggestion is KY jelly, which i might actually end up going for as its cheap and obviously inert, any suggestions?

I've bought some O-ring lubricant £4.99 delivered for my kegs. Not used it yet as they're all still under initial pressure test.
