Are my cornies leaking?

Post by DeadFall » Sat Aug 22, 2015 9:23 am

I've finally got some gas for the cornies I bought in the cheap sale a few weeks ago. I've replaced the o-rings that obviously damaged and given them a light coating of keg lube. To test them out, I've filled them to just under the input post with water and hit them with a 30psi blast. I've waited an hour and then done it again. This morning when I pulled the pressure relieve valves I barely got a hiss, the floor under the cornies was dry. I've gave them another blast of 30psi and liberally sprayed star-san over the lids and poppets. There's no sign of any leaks. Is this just the water absorbing the gas? Or do I, on all three cornies, have a slow leak?

Quick answer, water/beer absorbs co2, so that's prob what's going on. If you want to check them try them empty, fill your bath and dunk them, just like you would if you had a puncture in an inatube on a bike

Hope this helps,

It's a bit of a waste of gas, but the more pressure you put in the easier to see a leak. Or me being cheapskate, I rigged up the electric car pump to test. It just depends on what you have and what you can do.

Definitely absorbed by the water - 30PSI in the headroom of a cornelius keg is not much CO2 when compared to the volume of water.

The best way is to test it with compressed air.

My corny kegs arrived pressurised, didn't yours?

But you've got some slightly fizzy water.

I'm on a water meter so rather than fill a bath, I found I could use our 62 litre storage box from Wilko's to completely submerge a corny. Thinking about it, I could get away with something much smaller as long as I could tilt the submerged end to see where any bubbles were coming from.
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

Thanks, I put 5psi into them empty and submerged them - no bubbles and they held pressure overnight. Now got 1 filled with stout and one with a brambling x single hop red ale I transferred from a king keg.
