Cornie Kegs compared to botterling

Post by Fastline » Thu Dec 03, 2015 7:45 pm

When i started brewing Kit beer at the beginning of the year i kept buying lots of real ales IPAs and all sorts, 1 To get a better idea on all the different beers out there and 2 to get some bottles to use for my homebrew kit that was waiting to be brewed

Well i done the first kit and it came out great, so i got the bug, and started spending money on my new hobby

I was keen to get another kit going but came to the conclusion that probably cheaper and quicker to just buy the bottles than buy bottles of beer for the bottles

So anyway searched ebay and found a company selling bottles and rather than get the 40 bottles I needed I got 200, The Bottle Company South was the supplier

Before i got the bottles a I would drink the beer too early, now I have a Batch of APA, A batch of Canadian Blonde and a stout all bottled up

So one thing i have learnt is that i don't actually enjoy cleaning and sanitising bottles, i find it very time consuming and boring, so seeing the threads on here ive took the leap and got 6 Cornie kegs

Im yet to clean and sanitise my kegs and have still got to source a few bits to complete the setup

I've got some concerns with regard to maintaining the cornie set up, mainly relating to how much effort is involved with caring for the taps and beer lines

I've also going to want to rig up some means of cooling the beer without further filling the house up with beer kit

Im sort of thinking maybe i should have just made a bottle washer

Save your bottles, at least some of 'em, for special brews you want to mature for a while. I've got about 80, mainly empties :D

Corny kegs, taps and beer lines. No problem. I clean and sanitise them in batches of 2 or 3. Makes PBW a lot cheaper. Fill one of them just over half way and invert after a good soak. You can connect up two kegs via their liquid out posts, using a 'jumper' (tube with a liquid disconnect either end). Start with a little pressure then use gravity. This gets the dip tubes clean. Rinse and run through some clean water then sanitiser. You can run cleaner and sanitiser through your beer lines and taps just like you would for beer. I do this at the end.

I use proper beer line cleaner as a 5L bottle will last for ever. Don't do it very often as the beer keeps fine in my garage.
