Where to buy casks?

Post by onkeltuka » Mon Dec 07, 2015 8:40 pm

Hi everybody,

I'm a home brewer from Finland, I've been brewing for a couple of years now and up until now I've always bottled all of my beers. I would like to learn cask conditioning and the whole cask ale "cycle", but where on Earth can I buy those metal casks? All the vendors seem to sell just beer engines, taps and all that, but where can I get the casks themselves? I guess a "pin"- size would be best for home scale, for use at a party or that kind of situation where I can expect that all the ale will be drank during the evening.

Thanks in advance :)

Thanks! They seem to have everything I need. Any good tips on how to clean those casks? I've heard that's a common problem.

It's easy peasy, I've been using them for months, get yourself some corks and hard spiles so you can seal em up and stop them drying out until you can clean them.

Heat 20 or so litres to 65° - 75°, fit a keystone, fill it up, add oxy wash, let sit for 10 minutes, rinse, drain and plug with a shive.

I'll dig out my guides for you.

Edit:

Here is an old one I found but the principle is the same:

good info from Kyle_T on cleaning we use hot caustic wash but a lot of our casks have been left outside pubs for a while and often get full of fly eggs homebrewers shouldn't have this problem if washed soon after use ..one useful tool is a shive hammer Image
for removing keystones and shives without damaging the cask
