As far as i can make out the beer lines are just an extension of the inside of the keg, it's all sealed and airtight, I can't see the problem.

Some of my kegs did admittedly only last about a month or two, but I had a keg of Imperial Stout connected up for 18 months without a problem.
These are the answers I wanted to hear :) I guess that they were bound to come sooner or later since this isn't a "digital" practice and everyone makes up their own routines. I think I just might have the courage to try and leave the lines for cleaning every month or so and just see what happens.

I have very short 3/16 lines that go from the kegs in a freezer out to the wall and then taps. I've got the lines in copper pipe that goes from inside the freezer to the wall and has insulation over it.

I've cleaned my lines once in 18 months, although admittedly I should probably do it again now...

They look clean still and I haven't had any issues.

I'm with Growling on this - I clean my lines between kegs. Take line off the empty, mix a solution of standard beer line cleaner, and pump through. Let it stand in the lines for the recommended 30 mins, then a convincing rinsing. I have 2 cooling pods between keg and BE. There's no visibility inside them, so I like to clean the lines regularly.

Cheers,
Chris
