DIY Mini Keykeg... or not...

Post by floydmeddler » Wed Oct 05, 2016 5:41 pm

Hi folks,

This has been in my head for a while. I'd love to make a Keykeg styled 10L set up at home. I'm thinking an airtight container with a bag of beer inside. The beer tap on the bag is connected to a pipe (outlet) and the end of that is connected to the airtight container tap (inlet). There is a nozzle connected to the airtight container and a footpump can be connected to that. Idea is that beer is carbonated naturally in bag with sugar. When beer is carbonated and beer is served, a few pumps on the foot pump can bring the pressure back up immediately.

A bit like this. (sorry... crude, I know) Is there any scope with this or do I need to stop RIGHT NOW? Cheers!

go for it ;) if you could work out how to seal the bag against the containing pot so you could use the bags built in tap to pour would make it a lot easier.. a bit of a wedge in the base to push the bag against the tap void with the mass of the brew and a soft sealing gasket perhaps?? if you consider the bags single use?? glue em to seal even :)
ist update for months n months..
Fermnting: not a lot..
Conditioning: nowt
Maturing: Challenger smash, and a kit lager
Drinking: dry one minikeg left in the store
Coming Soon Lots planned for the near future nowt for the immediate :(

I am interested to see how this turns out too, my mate was suggesting this exact idea earlier in the week.
Any idea yet what you might use for a bag, would a polypin work ?

Maybe a simpler idea would be a tidied up and adjustable version of this on post #19 here -

Brewing -
Conditioning - Exmoor Gold clone (BYOBRA)
In the pipeline -

Heh, it seems a number of us have wondered about this. I've been using Jigsaw bag-in-boxes lately, which are a bit more floppy than the thicker polypins and the way they look after use gave me a very similar idea.

For me the ideal would be for the airtight container to be cheap, like a blue HDPE bin or something, if it were costly you may almost as well use a keg. However a potentially conflicting idea was to use a container with incorporated cooling, that the bag would just be placed in each time. Though I doubt I'll get around to trying it any time soon, space is a bit limited at the mo and with winter approaching its not so important.

Obviously, take care of yourself if you try; pressurised vessels and all that.

Yep - I'd defs want to go with the Jigsaw bags and preferably reuse them. Thinking a 10L jerrycan might be suitable. Just need to find the time...
