An added advantage is that because the beer line up to the check valve is under pressure CO2 bubbles don't form in it.
I had a few cornies over at a party last night, one thing i did notice with the hand pump, check valve setup was that once it came out of the check valve into the larger diameter tube a lot of CO2 came out of the beer and caused foaming (no need for a creamer :D ).

To be fair this beer was carbed for normally dispense and not for the hand pump so that might have caused the problems.
What way do you treat your beer in terms of CO2 when planning on putting it on a handpump??

I've been keeping the pressure in the placcy barrel a bit less than I would use if I was dispensing from the tap. The barrel is below the beer engine, so the pressure there will be even less.

I don't get any foaming - even with the sparkler it pours just the same as it did when I used a polypin (in fact with the polypin the carbonation was a bit low in the poured pint once most of the beer had been dispensed).

That's great Jim, what a good setup. I've been using the polypin/coolbox with great success but i think i'm gonna have to get one of those. :D

Sorry to jump on an old thread but I've been looking at the photos of the set up above and this is exactly what I'm looking to do. Can I ask as to what sort of fixing it is where the end of the pipe from the pressure barrel runs into the check valve? I've got myself the beer engine piping, so just need to get hold of the check valve and whatever other bits and pieces I need. Thanks in advance for your help, Adam

most of them (including mine) seem to have a 3/8 john guest fitting on the inlet and a spigot for 1/2" hose on the outlet, so I guess you would need a 3/8 john guest to hose tail to fit your hose from pressure barrel
something like this

Thanks Paul, that's very useful info and I'll make sure I also get hold of the adapter when i buy the check valve. Can I ask whether you also used jubilee clips when connecting it all together?

Thanks,

Adam

I use jubilee clips on the beer engine side but my current setup using corny kegs fit directly in the 3/8 john guest fitting on the input side.
All this will soon change as I switch to plastic pin casks

Thanks Paul, I've also considered using a polypin instead but the appeal of using a pressure barrel is hopefully the beer will stay fresh for a bit longer.

It might be an obvious question but when you connect it all up do you leave the tap on the pressure barrel permantly open or do you only open it when you want to dispense beer from the hand pump?

Thanks,

Adam

I'm now the proud owner of two Angram pumps! I've bought the pipes and check valve and am planning to connect it all up to my pressure barrel. The pumps are both second hand so can anyone recommend what to use to clean them. I've heard that Star San is good stuff but it seems hard to come by in the UK. As an alternative, would this stuff be any good:

I use similar stuff. It lasts for ages.
Purple line cleaner.

Most are a mix of a caustic and bleach so nasty stuff but it does the job very well. Purple colour is pH sensitive so it loses colour if solution pulled through is not clean. I leave mine in line for 20mins as per instructions for mine.

Don't use with anything that can't cope with caustic or bleach eg Aluminum.

OK with poly or SS for short soak.
