Help!!

Post by gibbiem » Sat Mar 01, 2014 2:28 pm

Put a brew in primary the other day and just noticed the tap is leaking slightly. It's only day 2 so can't leave it like this. Got another ready to transfer in to bottling bucket so could I transfer this one from leaking FV onto the yeast cake in the FV I'm about to empty? Both beers are pretty similar so not like it's an ale yeast cake and putting saison on or something. Cheers

I'm by no means an expert, but here's just my penny's worth of thoughts...

After two days in fv you are likely to have finished all your yeast cell reproduction and be well on your way converting all your lovely sugars to alcohol. By transferring directly onto a yeast cake now I would think you could have issues of over pitching, not to mention contamination risks and possible off flavours caused by all the dead yeast settled in bottom of old fv. I would be inclined to rack your older beer into bottling bucket, clean and sanitise fv and then carefully rack new beer from leaking fv into the better fv. Try to reduce splashing to avoid contamination with wild bacteria. At this stage your still producing lots of CO2, so it won't take long to build up your 'safety blanket'. Also full flow yeast activity means you stand a better chance of fighting off any contaminants that may occur. I wouldn't worry too much, as long as you operate in a clean environment all should be ok. These mistakes sometimes turn out to produce the best beer you ever made!

I agree with the previous comment. Transfer your brew from your leaking FV into a clean and sanitised FV and it will be fine.

Too late. Had to do it, no other option other that let it leak slowly and loose that beer. Not sure if it's going to be ok. It was bubbling like crazy when I first transferred but seems to have stopped now. Will be a week on Thursday so will take another gravity reading then and make sure it doesbt smell/taste funny. What sort of signs should I look for with infection? Cheers
