Mini Keg Remove Side-tap

Post by ajclarkson » Sun Sep 14, 2014 7:45 pm

I might be going crazy here, but I seem to remember reading somewhere quite a while back that you could remove the built in taps from mini kegs with the air vent at the top, and the hole that was left was the same as the 2 part bungs you'd usually use for a CO2 tap in the top. I don't have any mini kegs with built in taps in my collection so can't check, and googling around hasn't turned up much.

Does this sound right to anyone?

Basically, if I could have a mini keg with 2 bungs in it (one top, one side), that'd be great for my grand scheming :D

I removed one to see what was what, even with considerable care I damaged the can and I don't thing it would reseal with a stopper.

Good Luck. Aamcle

Thats a shame, it would seem I've imagined the fact that they take the same bung... #-o

No you haven't imagined it, I have read this too. Some guy was using it to create a diy tap solution....

I pulled one recently as the keg was rusty and i was kinda interested, the hole or what was left of it after i finally levered out the tap had iirc a straight top edge, so not bungable, even if you could pull one without damaging the minikeg (which i doubt).. just in case there are more than one flavour of mini keg mine were sourced via can direct..
ist update for months n months..
Fermnting: not a lot..
Conditioning: nowt
Maturing: Challenger smash, and a kit lager
Drinking: dry one minikeg left in the store
Coming Soon Lots planned for the near future nowt for the immediate :(

I think that the hole was the same size as the one on the top. However were the bung hole has slightly rounded edges the tap hole did not.

Thanks for the info guys, might have to have a think about whether this plan is possible then. I was thinking about separating the gas in and beer in so I could lay the kegs on their side an emulate a mini cask with a low pressure regulator and a beer engine. (Beer out of usual bung with a custom dip tube, gas into the side one, which would be on top when the keg is laid on its side)
