UK Kegerator Build with US Taps

Post by oktaneza » Sun Jan 11, 2015 9:58 pm

I just wanted to thank everyone on the forum helping me out. Over the last few months I have been toying with the idea of a Kegerator. I already had 2x crusader slimline 20L kegs but it was not ideal as I could not control the temps and the resulting foaming. Earlier in the year I saw a post showing someone putting 2xCrusaders in a Hotpoint fridge and realised this is exactly what I needed. I scoured the net till a decently priced unit (ebay) arrived. For interests sake its the Hotpoint RLA34 or RLA36 undercounter fridge will take 2xCrusader with sankey couplings. I had 2 options, beer tower with 2 handles or taps that come out the fridge door. As its a small fridge I didnt want to bend down, so beer tower it was (and it looks cooler!).

The components I used were as follows
- Hotpoint RLA36 (Graphite) - Ebay
- Beer Tower with Perlic 650ss Taps - Homebrewing.org
- Maplin DIY box & 5m electric cable - Maplin
- Expanding Insulation foam, Chalkboard Spray paint, PlasticKote clear spray paint & masking tape - Amazon
- 10"x1"x1" wooden baton
- John Guest 3/8" to 3/16" push fit connectors - Ebay
- 40mm PVC tube - B&Q

The tools
- Dremmel
- Electric screw drive and screw drivers
- Sharp Knife
- Sandpaper

My initial plan was to take the fridge roof off and then to cut the holes. Unfortunately the roof is glued on, so with a wish and a prayer I took the dremel to the top of the fridge once I had measured out the mounting position and cut through the plastic roof. I peeled the lid off and gently cut away the foam insulation (in case there were any electrics or chill lines), there was nothing there and eventually I got to the inner fridge with no issues. I realised the plastic roof was pretty thin and wouldnt be able to hold the beer tower without reinforcing. I mounted 4"x1" wooden batons on the inside of the fridge which I could screw the mounting screws into.

This is the type of fridge (unmodified)

Initial cut through the roof

All they way through - hooray!

Checking the measurments and deciding on the re-enforcement strategy

Cut from the bottom of the fridge up to add the re-enforcement batons

More insulation and a 40mm pvc tube fitted
Image

Wired up the STC1000 in the maplin DIY box
Image

Oops - ID vs OD Beer Lines. It was a problem for the Perlic tap barbs but sorted it out with some JG fittings
Image

Sanded and taped up the door for the first coat
Image

First coat of spraypaint, not great but got the hang of it and sanding between sprays gave a more even finish
Image

Gas/Thermometer lines fitted through a hole in the side of the fridge

Crusader Kegs fitted(but empty)

The final product

The Perlick taps rock

Nice job! I got the same fridge, kegs and controller :D

I really wanted taps like that but I got the fridge under a worktop in my shed and didn't want to cut the worktop. I settled on 2 dalex brackets with Alumasc taps. Nice bit of space in that fridge though. Perfect for Sankeys!

Nice result. I've just also seen this in Reddit

- Fridge was about £45 off ebay
- Tower & Taps were $190. If you get it shipped in there are various shipping methods but it adds up and also affects $40-$70
- STC1000, £13, DIY Box - £5
- Spraypaint £8

You can get towers for cheaper prices but they were not what I was looking for. I reckon if you are frugal you could probably get away with about £100- £140 end to end.

Lol, no problem! It was a fluke when the Sankeys plus couplers fitted so well! And leaves a bit of room for bottles at the back on the compressor hump. That hotpoint fridge was made for it. Last summer I thought it was the best money I had spent, cool beers, happy days

Alex / Oktanenza

Does the RLA 36 have enough clearance to connect and disconnect the Sankey connectors whilst the keg is on the fridge? I use a pair of 20L Crusaders with the normal JG connections.
I'm going to use my big Hotpoint larder fridge as a temperature control chamber in the garade, so I am hoping you can give me confidence to buy a nice compact kegerator RLA36 that does not further upset the girlfriend

No it's too tight for that. I made sure I left enough gas and beer line so that I could connect outside the fridge and then angle the keg in. It has a recess inside on top so you gotta angle the keg in, top first.

Thanks Alex. Don't suppose anybody know the product # for the JG elbow fittings that plug directly into the Sankey connectors and saves a half inch clearance ?

http://www.stonehelm.co.uk/Equipment/Be ... letAdaptor

That stem is for 3/16 beer line.

The brass threaded connectors are much better quality.

Ps. My fridge is the RLA31. Seems to be the same size though and look identical.
