Connecting gas line to corny!

Post by BrewBoyJoe » Sun Jun 14, 2015 3:43 pm

Hi Guys,
I am just about there with my corny corny setup. However, can anyone help regarding connection of the gas line from the reg to the gas inlet disconector on my ball lock keg! Nube when it comes to this and have watched Craig's tube etc but still not sure how to proceed with my setup.

The reg system I think is a mig welding one but is also bought for homebrew I think! It came with an adapter which is currently screwed to the reg! Not sure what to make of this! Note the weird inner smaller gas tube! Maybe I should not be using this. Possibly I can just push beer / gas line into the reg and also int the disconnector! (perhaps heat it first!)

Advice please. Hopefully the pic will make things clear. My ale has finished primary and I want to keg it up and dry hop in the keg (in a hop bag) which I was hoping to do today....

If that outer tubing is standard 3/8 tube I would be inclined to ignore the 4mm adapter and that thin tube and just connect the 3/8 tube direct to the disconnect on the corny keg.

ok so I yanked that inner wire and a little connector thingy out leaving a 1/4 inch hose to big for the disconnector. However, fortunately standard beer line fits in there quite snuggly. I just put a short section in then dipped the other end in hot water and fixed to the disconnect. So had to bodge it all together at the last minute despite seemingly buying all the right stuff. Still looks like it might be good enough. See below Cheers BBJ

You could buy one of these and one of these and connect it up leak free with some 3/8 line.

On the principle righty tighty lefty loosy! I wound the reg full in (no manual in the box / hard to find on tinternet)! Unfortunately it was fully open when I turned co2 on! and blew my bodge and some beer over the kitchen cupboards, scared my lady half to death! "Is this a good idea, you sure it's safe etc... etc..!" Probably good there was a weak link cos otherwise pressure may have built and something more substantial could have gone and bang, bang, bang!

I found the manual online eventually and you screw clockwise to turn it off and anti to increase the pressure! My bodge with no jubilee clips (didn't previously know what they were but they look useful) takes 35 PSI and blows out at 40! I could probably proceed on that basis to force carb at ambient temp but thought I should get the stuff and do it properly next week!

Unfortunately my brand new cylinder seems to only be a quarter full! I nearly broke my back getting that back from Walthamstow to Harrow on public transport! Those bast**ds! Unless my reg is not accurate. Presumably I can weigh the cylinder on my bathroom scales and that would tell me!

Enough of my ramblings. I will upload pics and comments once I've fitted those malt miller bits and bobs! Thanks for setting me on the right track. It's been pretty challenging to find what I need to buy and get it all home so far! Looking forward to finally getting up and running and will get a few kegs on the go and try work out some of those Brewdog top quality hopbombs!

Cheers BBJ

You can weigh your cylinder any time to work out how much gas you have left. Look for the "tare" weight stamped somewhere and subtract that from the reading on your scales (Problem: need to subtract the weight of the regulator as well).

I think the following is right The cylinder pressure reading will vary with temperature (lower the room temp and the reading will go down). As you release gas more CO2 turns from liquid to gas in the cylinder but the pressure remains the same, until there is no liquid CO2 left at which point the gauge will fall rapidly as you use the last dregs.
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

Yeah, the pressure reading is hopeless.

Weighing the bottle is the only easy way of monitoring at home. I put it on the bathroom scales (with the reg fitted, so easy quick disconnect) when 'new' to get the gross weight. Then weigh it every month or so to get the reduction. A pub sized gas bottle contains 6.35kg of liquid CO2 when full.
