leaking Gas Post

Post by Rhodesy » Wed Oct 07, 2015 11:26 am

So I am very new to this kegging business and last night I filled a couple of Corny Kegs (used) which I just purchased. All went well initally where I pressurised them to 20PSI and vented a couple of times. I then put them in the temp controlled freezer at 3C at around 9 PSI. On one of the kegs I heard a hissing sound on the Gas post which did get fainter so thought it may have been the keg filling. On moving the disconnect however it then started hissing again which makes me think it is the gas post? I tried the QD on the other keg and had no such problem. I am thinking it may be the o-ring on the post which the QD connects with? I do have a replacement however no lube as waiting on that coming as it was out of stock.

Do you think the above is likely as I should not expect a hissing sound even if I move the QD? I am using JG fittings on my tubing and have sprayed all connections with star san and see no bubbles. Can I easily remove and replace the O-ring on the post when it is pressurised (note I dont mean removing or loosening the post).

I think it's either going to be the gas dip tube o-ring, The o-ring you have mentioned or the poppet inside the gas post. Does it only hiss when the disconnect is connected ?

yeah, only when the QD is connected am I hearing anything. I checked this morning and it had stopped until I moved the QD slightly and it made a hissing noise again which again seemed to stop when I moved it slightly to what looks like a sweet spot. The freezer was on at the time due to me opening the lid and nudging the temp up so the background noise made it hard to say it was totally silent at this point.

I have the co2 bottle in there as still to build a collar and noticed the BAR pressure had dropped to under 40 from last night but I am aware when storing in colder conditions this can happen meaning I have no real indicator of how much gas has shipped.

Getting co2 has proved costly to me up here so really could be doing without forking out around £30-40 for a refill

In which case, I'd connect the keg to the gas to check the pressure then remove it rather than just turn the gas off.

The keg or tank pressure?

Sorry not following 100%

After six months I'm still anxious about leaks (though my refills are £17). I leave the QD attached and just give a quick burst a few times a day when carbonating but leave the gas turned off the rest of the time.

If you have a possible leak with the QD connected to the keg it is going to lose carbonation over time until you can fix it, so I'd disconnect it after checking the pressure.

Got you thanks!! I suppose looking at it the other way I should really test the QD with the gas off to listen out for a leak also.

imho its a probability of 80% that its the post external oring, 18% the poppet seat oring, and 2% the disconnect.. ;)

you dont need keg lube to change the post oring.. i have replaced every oring in some of my kegs and not used keglube or vasaline at all.. the post external oring u can pop on and off its just in a ridge on the post and only seals the disconnect ;)
a quick fix could be as simple as a couple of wraps of ptfe tape round the gas post and its current oring..

http://www.aussiehomebrewer.com/forum/i ... opic=67746 - a bit out of date but all the info u need to get cheap orings in soft silicone (easier seal - especially the lid) ;)

i agree with vacant minimise the number of on/offs with the disconnects but fwiw when serving from a keg i will connect up set the gas and leave till its empty. your gas system should be leak free, using JG fittings ensure u cut every tube square (dont use scissors as they deform the cut), and fit it in fully, dbl check the depth of every tube inserted into a JG fitting ;) Dont bend tube round a corner, Use a 90 degree JG fitting you dont want to put any sideways (sheering?) pressure on a tube/jg fitting connection, that will weaken the seal. (tbh i have dropped a bottle of gas but that was due to not closing a purging line valve completely after use.. DOH!!, my regs have crappy shut off valves fitted.. )
ist update for months n months..
Fermnting: not a lot..
Conditioning: nowt
Maturing: Challenger smash, and a kit lager
Drinking: dry one minikeg left in the store
Coming Soon Lots planned for the near future nowt for the immediate :(

Thanks Fil!! I changed the oring when I got home... Low and behold the problem now appears to be solved.

Next step is making the collar for the freezer :-)
