I've got most of the bits for my Kegerator build but I have 2 beers that have now been sitting in the fermenter for 3 and 5 weeks respectively that I can't keg because of a delay in getting hold of my CO2 cylinder. The 3 week one I'm not so worried about but the beer that has been in the fermenter for 5 weeks is starting to give me concern.
Bearing in mind that I've replaced all the seals on these kegs with the softer red silicon ones could I rack the beer to the kegs, prime with sugar and have this generate enough CO2 pressure to seal the kegs on their own without me giving it a quick blast of CO2 to seal? Is this generally a bad idea because I can't purge the keg with CO2 before racking?
I understand I'll get a layer of sediment at the bottom of the keg and I'm fine with that as it should be drawn off with the first pour.
Priming a corny without CO2 to seal
Re: Priming a corny without CO2 to seal
Id stick it in the kegs
It's only like putting it in a secondary fermentation bucket, the priming sugar will set off a bit of CO2 production and will protect the beer
Just take care transferring from the FV to corny that you use a nice long hose to minimise introducing oxygen
Gas it up a little if it needs it once you get your gas, but i'd say get it off the trub for now

I fill my cornies from the tap of the secondary FV/PB throu a tube into the liquid out. That way you fill with minimal O2 contact. But yeh if the seals are new you should have no probs sealing
Edit: with the prv open/ or lid open as not to over fill the cornie

Re: Priming a corny without CO2 to seal
to give the lid seal a hand you could suspend the full keg by the un-clamped down lid handle with a hook for the first 12 hours or so, the lids clamping action alone may not seal but the mass of beer and gravity can help it along
once so,e pressure has built up the lid will seal and can be clamped down to hold..
another gotcha could be some lids seal easier one way round .. easy to sus with gas at hand, once sussed a mark with a sharpie or similar will remind you which way round works best..
even if the lid dose not seal the beer will be fine under the co2 generated by the priming charge till the gas arrives..
go for it....
