Regulator for pub cylinder to King Keg?

Post by MattyBoy » Thu Nov 12, 2015 2:39 pm

I am trying to convert my kegs to bulk pub CO2/Nitrogen

I have sourced a couple of cylinders which came without a reg but with a HP connection designed for filling CO2 into air rifles at cylinder pressure.

The cylinders have a threaded adaptor on them which looks to be 5/8 Inch onto which the HP pipe goes.

The other end of the pipe has one of those little HP adaptors with ball bearings inside like you find on airlines for guns, compressors etc.

As a first step I have internally threaded one of the S30 inlets on one King Keg to take the brass nipple onto which the pipe fits. I was planning to get 3 more nipples for my other 3 kegs.

All good so far.

Can I find a suitable regulator with 5/8 female in and 5/8 male out? Not so far :(

Is there a option to get a fixing to go from the usual reg out 3/8 to my pipe's 5/8?

OR... do I junk the HP hose and use some "normal" LP hose from the reg to the keg? If so how do I feed the CO2 into my King Keg?

Thanks for any and all advice

Matty :)

Well your really want <10psi into the keg or it will just vent or explode, neither what you want.
I think 5/8" is the standard thread for a reg to cylinder.
Post a pic of the cylinder anyway.

You can change the o/p of the reg to what ever you fancy, I use a 6mm barb on mine.
To feed the S30 valve you can get a "head" for a mighty widget to fit it.

Thanks for the input :)

I did a search and I found the Widget World Brass adaptor pipe for S30 inputs - it's not cheap but as I can use it on all my kegs it's a valuable asset to have.

Yes I want to run them at 8-10 PSI so perhaps I just junk the nipple idea, get the S30 WW brass adaptor and fit the 3/8 out reg with the right sized barb attachment to push into the clear tube on the WW adaptor.

Sounds like the answer :)

Thanks

This female to male thread adaptor was on the cylinder when I got it.

I guess this has converted the connection from standard CO2/Nitrogen to the standard CO2 thread?

It seems to be the same size thread as the S30 fill valves use. Is this 5/8"?

Thanks

Hmm you WANT a female thread not a male one for the reg.

If it is mixed co2/nitrogen you need a regulator that is for mixed gas. Mixed gas runs at a higher pressure than plan co2. You will probably need to take the thread adapter off as the mixed gas regulator hose has a male thread on the end.

For the rest of the conversion try looking at this topic thread.

Thanks. Yes I was looking at that thread earlier :)

The reg I am planning on buying says on it "300 BAR Service" which is 4,350 PSI so it will be fine for the Mixed gas :)

So much tinkering t do as you say :)

Can anyone please confirm categorically the thread size of the S30 system.

I took my keg lid to a plumbing centre shop and they had nothing to fit.

The guy said he had no idea what size it was but it was "non standard"

Thanks for the feedback as I need lastly to get a barb fitting for the keg input now that I have a reg, reg barb, tubing and gas!

Thanks

I have removed the S30 inlet valves from my Keg lids and replaced them with 3/8 BSP fittings from a local hydraulics firm

The HB S30 system is based on a custom thread size of M18x2 which is pretty daft as there is nothing on the market which is compatible.

I bought 3 of these bulkhead fittings each with a 3/8 BSP to 8mm barb for 20 quid the three.

I really can't see a more cost effective way of setting KKs and HB Spheres up for direct CO2 feed.

My Kegorator is almost complete now.

The whole point of making them non standard thread is so they can cash in on the gas as nothing else but their bottles will fit them. I was planning on something similar before i bought corny kegs. I had planned on just using a 10mm push fit bulkhead fitting This , got one somewhere too....
