Soda stream cylinder

Post by Secla » Wed Jul 20, 2016 5:56 pm

I have rigged up a soda stream gas cylinder for dispensing from my kehs when out of the house, bbqs etc as lugging my big gas bottle about isn't really practical !

Has anyone used these for dispensing and can give me a rough idea of how long it will last ? Cylinder says 425g of co2. Only other option seems to be miniregs that use 16g bulbs but the cost of the bulbs seemed a lot more than this. Refills on the soda stream bottles is under £10 and I can pick up from a lot of high street stores

just done something similar with a Midget Widget CO2 bottle.

Not sure how long it will last, but used it for the first time at BBQ at the weekend, in conjunction with my Cool Brewing bag, and it worked really well.

was your connector from co2 art? I have one but the thread inside isn't quite long enough.

Secla - I have the exact same sodastream reg and also use it only for BBQs etc.. I've only used it a couple of times so far, but plan on weighing the bottle every now and again to get an idea of gas use. (The bottles have tare weights on if you forget to weigh a new one etc..)

425g is a good amount, I think the key is properly carbing the corny on your main CO2 bottle before dispensing on the portable rig. Some wildly inaccurate thoughts:

I have used 16g bulbs in the past and used to need just over 2 bulbs to dispense a pre-carbed 9L corny, so maybe 4.5 bulbs for a 19L corny: 4.5 x 16g = 72g per corny. So 425/72 = 5.9 cornys per sodastream bottle, very very roughly!

I also think I get through a 6.35kg pub bottle about every 15 brews, but this includes purging bottles and kegs etc., and I have 6 cornys. 15 x 6 = 90 cornys per 6.35kg or 70g per corny. So there is some correlation there, I'm not a factor of 10 out anyway....

I generally dispense at whatever pressure I've force carbed at as I have a kegerator with flow control taps and I can keep the keg at a set temp.

Think for BBQ dispensing il purge some of the keg pressure and just use 2-3 psi so I don't cause to much foaming through the party tap ! The temp of the keg is goi g to be pretty unstable

Ive just bought a few bits and bobs and am also looking to put together a portable dispensing set.

I've ended up with a secondary reg but don't think it's going to work like the primary-secondary model that @Dads_Ale has.

When I hooked it all up to my soda stream cylinder it all squeaked ominously! I'm guessing the clear gas line is not intended to handle a direct connection to a cylinder?...

Does anyone know if I can buy the grey gas hose and primary reg gauge and add them on to my secondary model or do I need to buy a primary reg separately?
