Hi all,
Whats the best way of serving my finished ale cold,,, I brew from kits and finish in 5 gallon pressure barrel but its all to warm,,,especially in the present climate .....not complaining though....also i tend not use gas but normal fermentation pressure
Any useful ideas please...
Thanks

Re: serving chilled beer
A self built kegerator or a shelf cooler, like a Cornelius Maxi, though the latter is intended for a steel keg setup, not plastic PBs.
A wet towel wrapped around the PB, ideally with a fan pointing at it will cool a little, via evaporation.

Re: serving chilled beer
The keggerator approach is my favourite; its simple, quiet and better for the beer to keep it all at cellar temperature (rather than just cooling it for drinking). Lots of people use them with gas and taps or beer engines, but it can just be a temperature controlled fridge that you open to use the PB's tap. Unfortunately they do take up a bit of space, which I don't have at the moment. Sadly, I'm reduced to filling pint glasses in advance of drinking, to give them a little time in the fridge first.

A US diy invention 'jocky box' is basically a cold box fitted with a coil through which you serve the beer, and fill the box with ice and water to chill the beer as it flows through.
a couple of meters of 10mm copper micro bore should be sufficient length, use 3m to be sure

If you were to make a jockey box here, what cold box would you start with to modify?
I am very interested in portable solutions (think camping), and US home brewers seem better served with suitable priducts

I wouldnt modify one to start with. simply use as is and submerge a coil in iced water.TheSumOfAllBeers wrote:If you were to make a jockey box here, what cold box would you start with to modify?

the posh ones with beertaps are intended to sit in front of a corny or keg, you dont need such hi pressure containment with a pb if you simply use its built in tap..
