Bottle Priming with Sugar
Bottle Priming with Sugar
Hello
Don't know if this is a daft question or not Here goes anyway's
I bottle all my beer, and prime my Bottles with Sugar Individually , However to get a consistant amount of sugar to each Bottle folks Batch Prime.
I think i have read to add 3/4 cup of sugar for 23 litres of Beer to so much water, But if someone could enlighten me please ( What is the Cup size) they use in size terms IE a Tea Cup or a Mug, or is it something else.
Thank You

To answer you question a cup is a US volume measure = to 237ml (I use 235).
Which is HORRIBLY inaccurate and batch sparge for is a crock IMO.
However a better answer to

Stunning. Best with caster sugar. Bestist best Tate & lyle caster sugar (but that really is being picky)

Get a "zevro sugar dispenser."..to get a consistant amount of sugar to each Bottle ...

Re: Bottle Priming with Sugar
I use a priming sugar calculator (then ignore the result and decide on a lower amount ).
I had 35 ltr to bottle last Saturday so I calculated the amount of sugar for 40 ltr and made that up to 400ml with boiling water. The extra solution means no chance of running out if some bottles get a generous dose.
Then it's easy to squirt the right amount into each bottle with a syringe e.g. 20ml for the 2ltr PET bottles or 5ml for the 500ml Grolsch flip-tops.

Putting sugar into 70 bottles one by one?
Why not dissolve the sugar in a small quantity of water. Give it a short boil (5 mins seems ok) and then mix into into the beer you’re about to bottle? So much easier and quicker!
The amount you need depends on the beer style and how much carbonation you want. As little as 30-40g for 23L (English ales with quite low carbonation) to upwards of 150g for same volume of beer for, say, a hefeweizen.
I have gradually learnt to err on the lower side to avoid overcarbonating. Especially for beers that you expect to keep for a while as the yeasts often keep chomping away and making CO2; we don’t want bottle bombs do we?

Re: Bottle Priming with Sugar
I get an even distribution and I don't disturb the yeast bed. I can empty a syringe in one bottle while the "little bottler" is filling another. Oh and it was 15x2ltr and 4x500ml this time. My son supplies me with fresh empty PET bottles in exchange for beer ... I think he gets the better deal.

I've been using Muntons carbonation drops, which i know I'm going to grief about! 1 drop = 2gm, which is just under half a teaspoon of sugar which seems to be a good level of carbonation for a 500gm bottle of ale IMO. I realise it is an expensive way to buy sugar but it is super easy and results in consistent carbonation levels. I may buy some plastic measuring spoons at some point to use with a funnel.
