Why were 3kg high quality kits not around in the 80's?

Or to put it bluntly why were the kits so awful then but now when you spend a bit of cash so much better quality...

What's changed?..did the technology not exist then to produce a decent kit?

In those days (or earlier in my case) common practice was to go for the absolute cheapest kit available. :roll:

In a way it was a good driver for me, cos that's why I went all-grain.
