Finnings?

Post by james_m_r » Thu Oct 25, 2007 5:23 pm

I have never used finnings before but one of my current brews (Fixby Gold) which has been in secondry for over two weeks is still as cloudy as the day it was racked and doesn't taste much better either.
What is the procedure with adding finnings, if possible, at this late stage?

Thanks,
James

I found with my Fixby Gold it didnt come good until bang on the 4 weeks proper conditioning time (1 warm week, 3 cold weeks). Even a week before its due date it wasnt terribly clear and had a really bitter twang that has totally dissapeared now.

Reading this forum Finings seem like a way to clear your brew if you're in a hurry and that your beer will clear eventually without it; is this the case?

spot on

it does nothing but pull the yeast out of the beer quicker

I believe side effects are a less stabel sediment (so only good for keg conditioning) and its believed to make beer go off quicker

Thanks for the tips chaps. Will leave it for another week and see what it's like then before resorting to finnings/isinglass.

Just noticed that the seal wasn't in the lid properly. It must have half fallen out as I was screwing on the lid 2+ weeks ago so have now replaced.
Could this be the reason it has not started to clear yet? On the plus side the taste has improved alot since Thursday.
