Wherry worries from a Bitter Virgin

Post by discodave » Sat Nov 24, 2007 5:24 pm

After writing a detailed letter to Muntons recently, advising them of my recent stalled fermentations with two of their products, I was extremely grateful to receive a Wherry kit from their customer relations department (dated DEC 2009 I think)...I take back all of my previous rants about the company. I was genuinely humbled!

The Wherry fermented really quickly at 20 degrees, with a final reading of 1015 at room temperature.

I primed a KK and kept at 20 degrees for 5 days, then placed it in the shed outside.

I couldn't help but take a sneaky sip (purely research purposes) and the taste is lovely. However the very first thing you notice as it wets your lips is it seems sweet.

Reading previous posts, 1015 is the realistic FG that everyone else seems to end up at with a Wherry.

As a stout man, I've never ever brewed a bitter before (I'd never even tried Bitter until last summer) so I am just asking for confirmation really, that this 'lip taste' is normal. Is this what Wherry in the pub tastes like? Do other bitters taste like this?

After the first sip, the sweetness seems balanced by an amazing hop experience...Am I making any sense?

I have the dad-in-law over at Christmas and he's as honest as they come with my beer. If it aint good enough, he'll tell me straight.

Any comments?

P.S. Thanks for a wonderful year of brewing. 12 months ago I stumbled upon this site by accident, got my gear out of the loft and as a result of the advice offered here, have made some absolutely stunning beer.

Cheers!

Wow!

Result from Muntons 8)

I rekcon the'll be inundated with letters when all our others members read this!

I've done about 5 Muntons kits, they all stuck at 1020  so I vowed not to brew another, and took my custom to Brupaks, so far I've done about 6 Brupak kits and no problems  !

I've also recently had the privilege of tasting some of my work mates ales (all Muntons brews). They don't bother using a hydrometer and just ferment and drink the results as they come. I tested the brews with my hydrometer and guess what.... all 1020!- still to be fair they tasted OK, just going to be a bit shy of a.b.v.
