'Recipe' kits

Post by Martin the fish » Fri Dec 28, 2007 3:48 am

Hiya everyone. This is my first post here on the forum but i've been reading loads of posts as a guest. Thought it time to join up as i've just started homebrewing.
Has anyone done any recipe kit's? Are these worth the extra and are they similar?
All(most) of the recipe's i've come across are for AG brewing. I'd love something close to tanglefoot or Wadworths 6X or Hobgoblin or ESB or or or....

Have a look at the Springfield Brewery, thier 'Roaring Meg' is available in supermarket off licences and as a kit from the Brewery, in Nottingham, I think.

Aha! Good answer.
Tanglefoot 'Style' 1 x Bitter kit, 1 x 12g sticklebract finishing hop (Infusion), 1 x 12g Cascade finishing hop(Dry) Personally i can't see as how this will be Tanglefoot but i'll give it a go.
Hobgoblin. 1 x Bitter kit, 1kg Dark Amber ,150g Black grain, 150g Chocolate Grain, 1 x 12g Fuggles finishing hop.

How would i go about brewing up these? I'm keen to try it if i could get some advice. Quite happy to do a brew diary about it to.

I must have a go at that! My current brews will take another 4-5 days before bottling. Not sure i can wait that long. I sense another FV arriving.

I'll give the Hobgoblin a go and then get a pale ale kit and finish with Northdown(not sure they are available in NZ)

Thanks for the help DaaB! I'm sure enjoying all this brewing mallarky.

That's an interesting way to approximate a commercial beer taste - nice one. I'm just about to start extract brewing so that might be a good way to ease the transition while I finish building my boiler.

btw - Martin; I just had a look at the website link on your signature... are you connected with Poor Knights Divers? The name rings a bell - I think I spent a couple of days diving with them when I was in NZ a few years ago - also did a dive on the Rainbow Warrior with Paihia Dive HQ and a few down in Milford Sound (just like diving in the UK again!)

This embellished kit approach is quite common practice for many people. ie. Basic lager or bitter kit + steeping grains + flavour and aroma hops and you can achieve excellent results. No reason why, if you know your stuff, you can't come very close to lot of favourite beers.

So are these clone kits available in NZ then?

I am the owner of Poor Knights Divers. But we've only been running a year. Paihia Dive HQ gone now. R Warrior still there. 8)

There are some clone kits here in NZ. But they are Caffreys/Kilkenny/Guiness and Newcastle Brown. The Hobgoblin and Tanglefoot recipe's came from an Australian site.
