Hazy lager

Post by mikewest » Sun Jan 13, 2008 11:11 pm

I made a batch of Muntons Continental Lager maybe 8 weeks ago and it has had adequate time to clear and condition but it has a persistant haze from the first sample I took before it had finished fermenting. It tastes fine and has good head retention but what caused the haze? I know I read something on here about this but I can't find it again.

I made the kit up with a kilo of Muntons beer enhancer i.e. DME and glucose/dextrose in what appeared to be a 70:30 ratio.

I know the haze means I will be forced to drink it all myself

Thanks for the very swift reply.

It's in an outside shed and the weather would do unmentionables to brass monkeys the last few weeks so maybe the current haze is not the original haze, but I am not carrying that keg inside until it has lost some weight.

10 days in primary, 6 days in secondary and 7 days conditioning warm after kegging and priming with 140g glucose remove to shed and forget for 4 weeks. The haze was still there after the warm week conditioning if this is any clue.

I have exactly this going on with my Coopers Australian. I noticed it because I brought the batch inside for 48 hours to firm the bottles up and it fell bright. However after putting it back into the cold it has a haze again. Will it eventually clear or do I need to get it into a fridge? I'm keeping it in the garage and the temperature ranges from 5 degrees to about 13 (13 at the mo as its quite mild outside).

Hi DaaB,

Following your advice I've put one of my bottles into the fridge (only one due to the lack of space) to see if this sorts the issue. One question I have - is the chill haze just a cosmetic thing or can it affect the taste or 'shelf life' of the beer?

Thanks, Gaz.

OK - that's good news. This is the third issue I’ve had with as many brewed recently - never used to have these issues in the good old Boots Kit days!!!
