Can I do the whole fermentation process in a king keg?

Post by cjbhaworth » Sat Feb 16, 2008 7:01 pm

A few months ago I bought a micro brewery kit. The Woodford's Wherry which came with wasn't to my taste but I was very impressed with the ease of brewing. The whole kit was boiled up and put in a King keg top tap, sealed up, left in the warm for 10 days and then transferred to a cool place for a couple of months. The condition of the beer was perfect and it ran clear right up to the last glass. I would like to try this with a Brupak kit. Has anyone tried this or does everyone use a fermentation vessel and then transfer to the barrel?

Thanks
Chris

It will pay you to buy a fermenting bucket in the long run. When your king keg is nearly empty you could always start a brew in a fermenting bucket & when the king keg is empty you will have a brew fermented ready to go into your king keg.

Apart from not being able to start a new brew until you have finished the first, are there any good reasons for not fermenting in the keg? I have been considering going down the "micro brewery kit" route myself.

No probs with my king keg!

Currently have Coopers Bavarian Lager sitting in it, been on the go for over 2 weeks.

Left it inside for the 1st week, around 18 deg C.

Then moved outside in the cold and its a lovely pint.

Have to keep the pressure up though, fitted a pressure valve to check its up the max.

Drop a pint out and give it a quick squirt of CO2.

If you brewing to drink then it works fine, if you are brewing to store then it is going to go bad eventually.

Only managed a month with mine before it was empty. Is that good or bad.....hmmmmmm!

Thanks for the advice - I've got colne valley and fixby gold sitting in two kegs. I'll report back on the result. If it all goes tits up, I've still got the cider in the fermentation bucket.

Cheers
