old boots kit

Post by mattyk » Fri Feb 15, 2008 6:34 pm

My dad has passed my way an old boots brew kit. Its well out of date ( 10 years..) however normally canned things keep ok beyond the date. What do you suggest bin it? or will it be ok? i guess the yeast is shot though so some new yeast will be in order.

Cheers Matt

Thanks for your reply. THe can has swollen a bit: what does that mean? is it for the bin?

Cheers

It is possible that there could be something wrong with it.

However, it's not unusual for very old cans to swell slightly, or 'pip' as it's called, especially when the can has been stored at extremes of cold and warm - for example in a garage. The latex in the can seam can contract slightly at low temperatures, allowing a little air in as the contents also contract, and then reseal as the temperature rises. The rise in temperature also causes the contents and air to expand, swelling the can ends.

It's the same reason why you should not keep unopened cans in the fridge.

Having said all that, 10 years OOD is getting on a bit...

You know what... i haven't got anything to lose except a bag of sugar!! i'll stick it on tomorrow and see what happens..

I'll boil it first just in case. if it tastes totally rank after 7 days i shall assume its for the bin - if not then thats a nice tidy 40 pints for the cost of an 80p bag of sugar :D

I would too, especially if it smells okay when opened... but as DaaB says, it would be wise to dilute it a bit and give it a quick simmer.
