i have been thinking of doing this kit, as it is always in our local wilkos, so now after good reviews i think ill give it a go, or maybe for an extra quid or so i could do the coopers stout

Picked up one of these from Wilko's today, I'll stick it on next weekend and it should be well matured for Christmas

Wilko's? That's not going to be exactly a top flight kit then, is it? Trouble is, we don't have any Wilko's over here. Not that I know of anyway.

I was toying with the idea of plying a mate who's set to visit me presently to buy some and fetch it with him. Only I reckon the bugger'd Brew the stuff!

I really must get some more reading done. I need to guage opinions about Stout kits. Then I need to sort out which appear to be most favoured from the seemingly Very limited choice available here :(

Pity. I really fancied that one, just from ye reaction to tasting it, CyberPaddy.

I've found Coopers kits to be excellent quality and judging by comments about their stout, it is no exception.
:D Made my day, that has! I was parousing the kits available to me last night and spotted Coopers. Now There's a good old Pompey / Gypsy name! I was drawn to it instinctively. But I was wary of the low price.

That's that sorted then. Coopers it shall be! And Household Suger??? Good sir; I have Never in my life put that vile stuff into my beer! Naturally I shall be using the much vaunted and doubless excellent SprayMalt. I was weighing that up at the same time as the kits

Dark type, ye reckon?

I was just coming on here to ask the very same question this thread asked.

I was in Wilkies today and had the Edme stout in me sticky mits but was unsure so in the end plumped for the Geordie bitter. Having read this thread though i'm gonna get one of these on the go in 10 days when me bitters fermented cos i've only one fermenting bin.

Sorry, Daab. 'Josey Wells' momment; I had to come back .....

Ye've somewhat lost me now, mate. Are ye suggesting then that I brew my Coopers Stout 'as is', first off? Only obviously still using Spray Malt in place of Devils Spawn. I'll take that as read as it's the first thing ye said.

But what's this about later 'steeping, bulking and "Mouth Feel"', please?

Have to forgive me. I'm not one for 'detecting', let alone recognising and describing " Hoppiness " etc. in a beer. I just like it or don't.

I can only really add that I like to see a Dark beer. Closer to black the more I'll be drawn to try it. I like to Taste Malt. (Alcaholic Horlicks or Ovaltine dyed black would be great by me!). And I can't stand filth like our Smythwicks or your Boddingtons! Thin, insipid gnats pisses of beers! (Sorry, affecionado's. That's my personal view). Anything that'll steer me a bit half right, based on that, please?

Right; Cheers! With ye completely now on " Mouth Feel ". Great explanation :)

One last thing, if I may? How long should I be Steeping for, please?

I'm a bit obsessive about sticking to given, precise instructions. In fact, that's what put me off the full blown 'Dark Side' methods. I could never convince myself that I'd sparged sufficiently without a pressure guage and stop watch

Saying that; I made the Dave Lines Fullers ESB and simply couldn't keep my hands off it! But then my LHBS pointed out how I may be more relaxed with a gallon of Malt Extract and a bag of hops ..... Rest is a drunken blur!

:-k Ok. I see what ye saying. So I just chuck it in, get on with what ever else I'm doing, and then pull it back out when my guts tell me time's up, eh? See how it turns out and take it from there?

Cool. Can't see any of That doing anything too fundamentally bad. Bit like making a cup of tea. I've done it in a rush. I've even been distracted and come back to find the tea luke warn with the bag still in it. I drink it.

Okie dokie. I'll take that on board and try to discipline myself to be less disciplined (Eh? )

Belated apologies to CyberPaddy, by the way, for hyjacking his Thread  Only, with the glass in his hand, I figured he was about done. I never expected my own little extension to go this far :?

No problems here, you actually asked some questions I've been putting off asking and Daab (as is his want) has answered them in words that the general lay-man (or 1/2 Irish gimp that I am) can understand

With regards to what you said about Wilko's not stocking good kits, I've never had a better stout from a pub as what I brewed with the EDME Irish Stout and Enhancer, my next one WILL be with DME and then maybe some extra speciality steeped grains ala-Daab.
