After a lay off of over thirty years, I have recently started brewing again.
My first attempt was with a cheap kit (listed above). This was quite drinkable, but distinctly 'home-brew'.
My second attempt (Woodforde's Wherry) was my only ever failure, as the brew never cleared.
I then tried using two cheap kits (YDB), with no added sugar, and am very happy with the results. I have reduced the amount of priming sugar to 75% of the recommended amount. I am now experiemning with the kind of priming sugar (have moved from refined cheapest to demerara, and was wondering if anyone could recommend sugars for priming. As stated, I am really happy with the rich, dark brew achieved, and am now just tinkering.
By the way, does anyone remember Sarah's Bitter?

Young's Definitive Bitter
Hi Mark and welcome!
I used to experiment with different sugars and found a good mix of 1/3 t+l, demerera and muscovado worked well in any bitter. I would also add extra hops which had been steeped in hot water for a few mins - this made any 1 can kit excellent. Try East Kent Goldings for a start.
FYI, put hops in a bag (ounce), put bag into microwavable container with enough water to cover the hops, heat to boiling, leave to steep for 5 mins, squeeze bag, remove bag and discard, pour cooled liquor into keg/end of secondary, add rest of beer, wait 2 weeks at least and enjoy
