Interesting that you say that Doughboy because it is this issue that led me to this site in the first place. I added the DME into the hot wort as the instructions stated and got exactly the same reaction as you mention. Large hard pieces. They did dissolve slowly and seemed to have cleared before adding the yeast but might have left the smaller lumps. At this point I was convinced I had done something wrong so scouted the internet and ended up here.

I am sure that I read on the forum somewhere that you are best to add the DME after adding some cold water as it melts better in warm water? I did this with my 2nd brew (Muntons Export pilsner) and it did seem to dissolve a lot better.

I bottled the IPA last night without the gauze and had no problems. Looking forward to trying some now.
