Beer Bottles
After reading about exposure to light spoiling beer I now favour brown bottles, with maybe a few clear so i can see when the beer is clearing.MartialAnt wrote:Hobgoblin bottles are hard to cap. it is possible but takes for ever with a twin lever. I threw 46 bottles. Was gutted. i steralised them all and poured 20 then found out how hard it was.
Marstons india pale ale are good. Clear bottle so you can see when its cleared. Easy to cap.
I have some of those Ikea ones and they are fab! Especially if SWMBO is watching what I drink, the extra space can add up after a couple of glasses!grumpysod wrote:I either use one of These, or a real pint glass from the Belfast Beer Festival - the type that has a line for the pint of liquid and space for the head. If there's anything left in the bottle a quick slurp sorts that problem out.

You can use Wychwood bottles but they are awkward. I find a bit of weight gets the caps on (and I can apply that in spades!).Chris The Fish wrote:Steer clear of wychwood bottles, they have a rounded neck which doesnt allow a 2 lever capper to gain purchase.
also, when you bottle, include some smaller bottles for tasters during the first stage of conditioning, and a few clear bottles so you can see when its cleared.
good luck

SWMBO says these look a little thin and is refusing to let me run to Ikea. Put her straight please? The idea of 8 matching, oversized pint glasses makes me fel all grown up!grumpysod wrote:I either use one of These, or a real pint glass from the Belfast Beer Festival - the type that has a line for the pint of liquid and space for the head. A SWMBO that doesn't want to go to IKEA? That's a first.PMH0810 wrote:SWMBO says these look a little thin and is refusing to let me run to Ikea. Put her straight please? The idea of 8 matching, oversized pint glasses makes me fel all grown up!grumpysod wrote:I either use one of These, o
The Mjod mugs are thicker glass than a nonic or tulip style pint glass, but not as thick as the britannia/dimple mugs we used to get. I'll get a couple of pics later on to show the size of the beastie
Have any of you wanting bottles tried your local pub landlords?
Local footy club and local pub both said yes to me, which was 2 out 2 indicating to me that the landlord probably has to dispose of them himself.
The one pint Magners bottles seem to be very good for bottle conditioning AND in todays ECO-SYSTEM-AWARE age the fact that you will just wash and re-use will help the environment rather than having them melted down and turned into - different bottles, may well give you an added edge in persuading him to put them in a different box for you to pick up weekely (or whatever)?
I went with the pub in the end as the hassle of having to pick up on a non match day when someone was there seemed alot of hassle.

Just to add my 2p I generally bottle any excess beer in Landlord bottles or Brakspear Oxford Gold bottles, the labels come off both really easily and the bottles look good too.
Oh and if you're into that sort of thing the brakspear bottles have viable yeast in the bottom, you can grow it up and use it to ferment a batch. I've heard that WLP023 is a similar yeast, I've used both and can report that they do ferment and taste similar
