ammonia smell

Post by stega » Sun Apr 20, 2008 10:15 pm

am onto my 3rd kit.. coopers ipa. after a wherry and muntons conkerwood.
after about the 3rd day of fermenting i was getting a strong ammonia type smell from the top of brew. almost like smelling salts. is this normal? its not as bad now (5 days fermenting) but it just doesnt smell as "beery" as the wherry did. slight chemical smell. i sanitized and rinsed thoroughly. should i be worried or will the smell dissipate?

cheers.

I would not worry. I have noticed the same with the woodforde's kits, They smell good when fermenting. Other beers I have made have the amonia smell but turn out good. I think it is just the Co2.
