Preasure Barrel

Post by meikle » Fri Apr 25, 2008 4:05 pm

Hi,
I have been making beer kits for over ayear now with some success but each time I put it in to a Preasure Barrel it ends up in the bin.
Is there a way of testing the the seals are ok & the barrel is holding preasure.

Thanks
Colin

simplest way is like you would a bike tyre.

preasurise with CO2 form whatever you use (bulbs or cylinder) then brush a washing up liquid solution around the lid and gas valve tap etc and look for bubles.

if none then leave as is and open the tap the next day to check there is still preasure. if not you missed something with the soap - try again :D

oh also if you let us know why you are throwing it away - what sort of off tastes are there, the more knowledgable folks on here can probably tell you what bug is getting at it and the likely causes and cures.

I feel your pain! I have recently had some frustrating problems with my barrels that resulted in several batches going down the drain - don't let it get to you, once you solve the problem it will be a great relief and you can get back to brewing with confidence

Are you getting infections, or is it just lack of pressure?

Try bottling a few pints and see if it comes into condition in the bottle. That will also indicate if you have a leak in the keg, or just not enough yeast carried over tot he keg to condition the beer (Unlikely)
