Force Carbonating

Post by MartialAnt » Sun Jun 01, 2008 2:43 pm

My keg of IPA is flat. Its had long enough to carbonate by itself now. I think it might have been due to spending too long in the FV making the yeast or protein settle too much. Ive bought a Co2 thingy from Wilko's and have fired a bulbs worth into the keg. Its still flat (and now cloudy).

The questions are this:-
How long does it take for the bubbles to appear with FC, is it instant or does it take time?
Do i need to fire another bulb into it now?
How many bulbs is too much to the point where it will explode, would a 2nd bulb make it explode?

Also..... Once it is fizzy, would i be able to swap the injector cap for the normal one so i can force carbonate the other keg? That one isnt very fizzy either.

Both kegs have had a week in the warmth and 2 weeks in the coolest place in the house. Warmest time of day being 14c.

Incase you need to know there is between 32 - 35 pints in each keg.

I bottled a few of each and the have bubbles in them.
Why are kegs crap???

I would hazard a guess that you have a leak in the keg and any natural carbonation had escaped and so will any of the CO2 from the bulbs.
Might be worth repriming ie more sugar and two weeks in the warm. Make sure you have a good seal on the lid though, maybe use some vaseline on the threads see if that helps.
I never had a luck with my placcy kegs hence why i moved to cornies, never looked back :D
