started my first kit yesterday

All went well mixed all the stuff together got a reading of 1040(it is a coopers stout with beer enhancer ) Late last night it was stating to form a small head so thought i was heading in the right direction Temp is about 26 , but i woke up this morning for work and went to check on it and it is like a baby volcano it had started to bubble over the top of fem tub so i wiped it all up the left the MD in charge of it

, She has phoned me a few times today for an update and it is still coming over the top !!!
Is this normal ???
is it ruined ???
and what have i done wrong ??[img][img]

It's fine. Tell your wife that head's a good thing. Might be worth checking the ambient temperature is not too much (>22C) as this can cause rapid fermentation.

Might have been abit warm aye if its done that. Its not ruined though, just make sure anything thats started spilling out doesn't go back in again.
Clean it up carefully and put the lid back on

The ambient temperature is about 18 in the room at the min but temp of tub is about 26 still have opened the windows to try lower the temp in the room before the MD has a fit , she is not a happy person at the minute she thinks that it will take off

If that radiator's been on, chances are it's been too hot. You would be better off keeping it a place where the temperature is constant rather than warm. 18 or 19C is quite warm enough.

It should be fine in that case. The beer won't be hurt by the 'boil over', though it would be best to clean off the edges of the fermenter to prevent infection (wipe the outside with sanitiser after cleaning).

If the ambient temp is about 18/19 and the radiator isn't on, how is the bucket at 26
Maybe you can call this brew "Mount Vesuvius Ale" lol

Did you check the temperature of the wort before you pitched your yeast? From experience if you pitch too warm, and the yeast takes off, it can be pretty exothermic and actually get hotter...

You have a temp sensor on the outside of your bucket it looks like - get a propper thermometer and try that, them strip things are not that great for a propper reading.

I don't know why but I've noticed that dark beers can give more rapid, vigorous fermentations than pale ones.

Speaking of vigorous fermentation, I went to a distillery in Scotland and the observation hatch was open on the FV for us to look in and the stuff looked like it was boiling (no it wasn't the boiler). They said it didn't take mch more than 48 hours to ferment to around 8%.

Fermentation has slowed right down now looks like it is finished with the lava over the side . There is still bubbles coming up so i will leave it for a few more days then take a reading (temp on outside of tub is now showing 23 )(but windows have been open all day in that room due to the heat we have been getting up here in glasgow today )
