homebrew effects

Post by pantsmachine » Mon Jun 09, 2008 11:07 am

I had a good think about posting this but i've got to ask. I have drank mostly guiness for the past 20 years with a few bottles or pints of commy lager thrown in and a good few pints of real ale all in various pubs throughout the world. I say this as i know what a commy hangover feels like and also around what pint i will start to feel the effects.

Since starting to make homebrew i find that the effects of the beer kick in much faster and if i stop beer guzzling and relax (as i did yesterday in the scottish sunshine) i lose the effects quite quickly and my mouth does not feel like the inside of a dogs arse. Also the next morning i am up like a lark with zero hangover(this is based on about 5/6 1/2 ltr bottles of homebrew). So i'm asking does anyone else notice the difference? Oh aye and yesterdays 6 were Belgian white beer and guiness clone). Try doing that with Hoegarden and commercial guiness and see how you fare the next morning(i know, i did it this time last year in Gothenburg, it was not nice)!

I completely agree. I can now drink myself half blind and not wake up feeling like camels have pooed in my mouth.

Can't say i've ever been up like a lark though. More like a sluggish hippy who'd rather stay in bed.

I like the 'sluggish hippy' bit. Also think its great that you are in NZ getting pissed and hangoverless just as we are. Good luck with the shelobs sting. I have been reading about it. One for me in a year or so! Say hello to my wife cousin Atholie if you see her. 'What do you mean which island is she on? You mean there's more than one!'

This is why I am so sceptical about what commercial brewers put in their beers. Something like Carling, Grolsch, Boddingtons give me a raving headache if I’m forced to drink them. Nowadays if its all that’s on offer I’m on fizzy pop. Yet my homebrew I have failed to have a hangover yet. I was close after my first batch of TC coupled with a party but that was more like a groggy haze couple with laughing at myself in the mirror.

yet another great reason to love this hobby 8)

I have to agree. Commercial beers and lagers leave me feeling it the next morning but home brew is the opposite. the worst I have noticed was brilliantly defined above as "sluggish hippy" – for me its that lethargic feeling but compared to the entire work crew with jack hammers on my head after a skinfull of commercial beers it’s a pleasant change

I have never noticed the difference. HB can still give me a cracker.

I'v also noticed that I never get a hangover.

I'm not a big drinker, but with commercial beers I would always feel a bit iffy in the morning but suppose its to do with the yeast giving back vitamin K.

Techincally hangover is caused by the effects of dehydration on the brain, causing it to shrink, resulting in pain. So really you ought to suffer hangover from 'excessive' drinking of any alchohol. But we all know that some stuff gives you a blinder. With me it's wine, and crap lager. Wine probably because of the tannins, which increase dehydration, and lager because :

A few weeks ago I left a half finished pint of homebrew in the back bedroom and forgot about it. It only took three days for it to turn white and loose it's smell. If you leave a pint of stella out in the sunshine, it'll still look like beer a month later, if smelling slightly odd.
They put all sorts of nasty stuff in there to improve shelf life and that's usually what gives you the worst effects of hangover.

Worst of all, pasteurising beer kills everything in it.
The Ancient egyptians used to prescribe beer because it was known to have an anti-biotic effect.
Homebrew has all the good stuff, and non of the bad stuff in it.
Having said this, I can still give myself the hangover from hell with homebrew.
I suggest everyone try drinking a pint of water with a 'resolve' disolved in it, just before retiring for the night. Works every time for me.
I notice also that Guiness doesn't give me a hangover.

Same here really. If i'm drinking more than 2 or 3 pints of homebrew ale or lager, i'll need an extra hour or two in bed but I never get the kind of rancid headache you get from cheap lager. In a moment of weakness last year I bought 4 big bottles of Ostravar (generic Czech lager) for a pound each, not only did they reek of sulphur & diacetyl and taste awful, they gave me the most horrendous day long hangover. Never again ](*,)
