using a second kit as fermentables

Post by Frisp » Tue Jul 08, 2008 3:52 am

my Coopers Dark ale is maturing quite nicley but the aftertaste of Treacle is a bit on the strong side but I do like a hint of treacle in my ale.
How do you think it would work if I did another coopers dark kit and used a Cheap Geordie Bitter kit instead of Sugar and bumped the OG up a bit with beer enhancer to say 1.050 ish to compensate for the unfermentables in the Geordie kit.
And what could I expect it to finish at?

Are there enough fermentables in a geordie kit to contemplate this and would it smooth out the treacle flavour?

Sugestions and / or advice please

I think your main issue will be that both kits are hopped to be diluted to 5 gals each, if you only make 5 gals all told, then its likely to be over hopped  .

Also you may find that thebalance of unfermatables (dextrins etc) make the beer more syrupy/sweet that you like - but I think this is less likely to be an issue.

Where is your treacle falvour coming from - the kit?

If you were trying to "compensate" thaen fully fermentables would be the choice (dextrose/sugar). But as yeast (from what I have seen here) generally works on a percentage attenuation (within its range) I dont think this is going to work how you think.

Where would it finish FG wise - gawd knows....

If you discover a magic cure for treacle flavour let me know - I have 25 pints of coopers real ale primed with black treacle that I drink only when I run out of other beer (which isnt often).

Thanks I will just have to try a few different kits or recipes to find a flavour I really like.

if you want to ease the treacle flavor then you could try using the 2 kits but make it up to 10gal (with additional fermentables) this would effectively halve the coopers dark in the brew.

it might be better to use another coopers kit though (real ale/bitter)

i have not brewed with these so its just a sugestion

Just for the record, I'm no expert but that sounds like a great idea! i suppose you would get an 'average flavour'.

Other than that, I woudl suggest priming with treacle as per macleanb's idea... but again I've not tried that either.
