Out of Date Kit

I was given an out of date Coopers Premium Bitter Kit when I bought my pressure barrels.

It is about 18 months out of date!

Am I right in saying that if I bin the yeast supplied and replace with a new one the kit should turn out OK??

If so what is a good yeast to try?

It also says to use 1.5Kg of Coopers Light Malt Extract, I don't think the local homebrew shop sells that, any suggestions to an alternative?

Ps quick update on the leaking barrel problem, after putting the tap seal on the correct side of the barrel....one week later so far so good!!!

Like you said replace the yeast, you could also boil the extract with as much water as your biggest pot will hold. Have heard this can make a difference with out of date kits. You can use any brand light malt extract or 1kg of dry malt extract would work also. Alternatively 1kg of Beer kit enhancer and failing that even a kilo of tate and lyle would do.

As it's a freebie it's got to be worth a go.

Tinned produce will normally last for ages past the bbe date but maybe someone else here could confirm if liquid malt extract deteriates over a shorter period of time.

If its a Coopers Premium Australian Bitter then it'll be a lighter beer compared to a standard English bitter. See Coopers.com.au

As for replacement yeast I'd go with the reliable Safale04 and your homebrew shop will probably stock Muntons Light Spray Malt a dry malt extract.

The oldest kit I've done was around 10 years out of date and it was fine. Just replace the yeast (s04 as suggested is a good bet) and boil the contents for 10 mins regardless of whether it's out of date is good practice.
