Saazing up a Coopers Lager kit

Post by Phild » Sun Jul 13, 2008 1:54 pm

Hi there, I have searched the forums and read mentions of adding hops to lager kits to perk them up a bit.
I have some Kent Goldings and Some Saaz in the freezer and wondered if I could use it in a Coopers Lager brew? It's been in the freezer for a few months, will it still be ok?
Also, how much should I use and when do I use it? Throw it in the boil with the wort for 10 mins or plop it in the primary or secondary fermenter?

Cheers

As DaaB says, Saaz is perfect for a lager.

I find you can be quite aggressive when adding extra late hops to a lager (to my taste anyway), my usual method is to boil 1/3 the hops in the rinsings from the can for 20 mins, then add the other 2/3 as the liquor cools. After a further 20-30 mins, strain and add to the fermenter. I would say 25g of Saaz is a good start, but I would happily add 30-40g myself.

If the hops are very old, you could add even more.

This is the way I always do lager kits now, it makes a vast difference to the end beer. The basic idea was DaaB's originally, but I really haven't found any way to get a better kit lager result. Even the OH likes it!;)

After posting I found another post saying Saaz was not good for lager...so i didn't use it  . My brew is in the fermenter and bubbling away now so it's too late.

Not too late for dry hopping.

Not too late for dry hopping.
So I throw it in in a hopping bag (whatever you call 'em) and leave it in there? Or should I throw it in loose?

Nothing to stop you making a 'hop tea' and adding that, using water instead of my can rinsings.

Cafetieres are useful tools...
