Hi Guys - I am about to brew a cider kit (John Bull Premium Cider/Country Cider)on the tin it says I can make it at 5% or 7% I am going to go for the 7% & like most kit's it also says just add sugar, has anyone done this kit befor or can anyone advise on a diffrent/better form of sugar to use ? I have stopped useing cane sugar in my beer kits - I have been useing malt extracts or two tin kits. Also the kit comes with a small packet of cider yeast - will this be OK or should I get more. Also a packet of cider nutrient - is this the sme as yeast vit ?
I like my cider medium sweet if pos - not to dry or not to sweet.
Any advice would be great
Thanks
Nick
Advice on My 1st Cider brew - please. . .
Buy some brewer's sugar or glucose to use in place of table sugar.
The yeast from the kit would be OK, i imagine, or you can buy some proper cider yeast from one of the brewing websites. Shouldn't be needed unless you want to spend the cash.
Yeast nutrient is yeast nutrient, i wouldn't personally buy anything that claimed to be specific cider nutrient. The only exception is realy Yeast Vit (iirc) which is dead yeast hulls, as opposed to just pure chemicals.
As to sweet/dry factor... you won't realy get a great degree of control there unless you have the ability to stop fermentation where you want it and force carbonate.
You could add lactose if you like, or artificial sweetener, depending on your feelings about artificial sweetners.
