My first brew with my new fermenter had a similar issue i.e very plastic smelling FV (youngs 25l with 4" screw top) & plastic smelling beer, which ended up down the drain.

I put it down to 'over' cleaning with an amonia based cleaner + the new'ness of the FV. So I cleaned it out several time with hot water. Then switched to Idophore + left the vessel open between brews to let it breath.

Fingers crossed, I haven't had any issues again & if anything the FV has retained a brew smell now.

I also use camden powder (from hop & grape) to treat my water but can't say if it makes a difference, as the two brews I've used it on, are currently conditoning. Incidently, the powered from H&G is cheaper than the tables & easier to use, as it's already powered.

ive only ever used sodium met and never had a problem, and when ive had a sampling evening and put a kit on sometimes my sanitation leaves a lot to be desired.

i cannot recommend 1/2 a camden tablet in your water highly enough.

Now I have some Iodophor and used that on my last brew. So it was Soda to 'clean up' and Iodo' to kill off. Result? First out of three tries that Hasn't had that dodgy tang to it.

In summary then: 1/2 Camden in 'All' water. Soda clean. Iodo' sanitise. Easy life and great beer!
Great, thanks Ditch, Easy life and great beer are definitely what I am after!

I give my FV a good clean after I rack to my Keg, including a slightly more diluted Idophore sanatise, followed by a good wash out with hot water. I then remove the tap & seals & then given them a good clean.

The result is, that I don't have any stubourn deposits i.e the oldest deposit can only be from when I kicked off the brew (if that makes sense). So as a result, I don't have to use soda crystals.

It also helps when kicking off he next brew, as in theory, you only need a quick wash out + sanitise before you're ready to go.

I also do the same for my kegs.
