Overflowing fermentation

Post by BrewManChu » Tue Sep 02, 2008 5:37 pm

Hello everyone,

I've just starting home brewing again after not much experience before. Last night I put on some Great Eastern - this afternoon the foam has started to overflow the FV - do I need to worry about this - I've just mopped it up a bit. I followed the pack instructions so I'm thinking this might not be a problem for the beer - just for me with the wife.

Any thoughts or information on this would be great.

Cheers!

Sounds like a healthy vigerous ferment 8)

What size is your FV? I would have thought it should have room for 5 gallons + 4-5 inches of head space. Are you sure you only topped up the kit to 5 gallons?. If you did your FV should (depending on what your using) be big enough to pretty much contain all but a super vigerous yeast head, I usually get 3-4'' of foam for 12 hours or so but it usually calms down quickly after that.

Check your fermenting temps not too high (18-20oC is a good target)

Thanks for the reply Russ. The FV is 5 gallon. The kit called for 6 pints of boiling water with the malt and then topped up to 40 pints - I managed to get an additional 33 pints in and got close to the top of the FV (about two inches of space left).

Temperature wise, it's justing in the kitchen/dining room no heating on but the weather is quite warm at the minute.

Hopefully it won't affect the brew in any adverse way!

Your FV sounds a bit mean size wise if your sure you have the right amount of liquid in (don't trust the markings on the side of the FV they can be miles out). My FV (sold as a 33ltr bucket) regularly holds 27.5 litres, as I brew extract brews and make 6 gallons at a time it still has a good 2'' head space, which can be a bit marginal

If you've cleaned up and stand the bucket on a tray to catch any future spills SWMBO shoudn't give you too much agro (until you start buying cornies and spending too much time on this forum )

Sure the brew will be fine 8)

Mine do that quite often, it's hasn't made a difference to the beer, it just makes a mess on the floor.

Funny, the only time this has nearly happened to me was with Great Eastern.
