Oh No Not More Carbonation Questions!

Post by JimJam10 » Fri Sep 19, 2008 3:40 pm

Hello all

Another first timer here.

Started my very first Kit about two weeks ago, which is an 'Art of Brewing Yorkshire Bitter'. Fermentation finished after 7 days so then bottled my brew. I put half a measuring teaspoon of granulated sugar in each 500ml bottle. Kept the bottles in the kitchen for 2 days which is about 20C and then after hearing stories of exploding bottles I decided to put them up in the shed out of the way of my 1 year old. Which temp is 15-18C.

I cracked a bottle open last night, after a week of conditioning, just to monitor its progress and I had mixed opinions. It tasted really good at this early stage, so i cant wait to try it in a few more weeks time. It made a slight hiss when opened but has very little bubbles. I mean I don't want it to have too many like a lager but a few more would nice.

So my questions are, will the bubbles come over time?, should I have kept them in the kitchen for longer, before they went in the shed?.
Or could it be something else. Any help would be appreciated.javascript:emoticon('')

Cheers

As a fellow newbie, the general response I've had to many of my queries has been 'give it time'. From the sound of it your brew's coming along nicely. Generally you should allow 2 weeks for conditioning, and ideally 4 or more. So as they say, in this case 'Patience is a virtue'! (It's bl**dy hard thought!)

Hows tha doin JimJam10
Welcome to Shawshank.
As RichardG says, give it time. Sounds like you've got it cracked already, brewed and bottled, job done. So what's your next brew going to be?

Thanks RichardG

I shall try another in a weeks time and see if that's any different.
Only the one promise. Ahh

how much sugar you put in is down to how much you want. if your using a standard premium ale bottle then i generally use the following amounts..

Stout - 1/2 tsp
Ale - 1/2 tsp - 2/3 tsp
Pale Ales and Lighter Ales in genteral - 2/3 tsp
Largery type beers - up to 1 tsp

with these amounts your bottles are fine, just dont point them at your child

Thanks Guys

Really useful info Chris The Fish, Cheers

Need to get another brew going soon, have nothing to drink while waiting for my bottles to condition.

I was thinking of trying Coopers European Lager, will keep you posted.
