Sugar?

Post by Secretagent » Wed Sep 24, 2008 10:19 am

I got my fg today and it is 1.012 on day 7.
original reading was 1.042.

I know it's far from ready to be bottled but i want to know exactly what i am doing for the next stage.
Does anyone transfer the beer once it's ready to another 5 gallon bucket to help it settle?
Also can i use household suger in the bottling stage?

Oh and it smells good!

That's ready to bottle, and yes you can use household sugar.

Is it? That was quick! Should i take a reading tonight again to see if it is the same?
It is a bit cloudy, is that normal?

Make sure you see the gravity steady for a couple of days before bottling/kegging, that's your indication that it is finished. Additionally, you should see the beer start to clear down, which is a further indication that fermentation has finished.

I like to allow a few days for the beer to clear down a bit before bottling.

1012 could be finished, depending on the kit and whether you added sugar, beer kit enhancer or spraymalt, if any was required. A single can kit with 1Kg sugar should end around 1006, but with spraymalt the same kit should end up around 1012, as would a 100% malt extract 3Kg kit. A single can kit made with BKE should end up around 1009.
